Following the huge success of the Paralympics in London earlier this year many people believe it has altered the views and opinions of today’s society towards the disabled community. The Paralympics event received an unprecedented amount of cover and support across the world during its spell in August and September 2012. Many people who once felt sorrow and pity for disabled people were left stunned as they began to take notice of the pure talent and skills on show during the games. The excitement generated by the disabled athletes during the summer is one to be desired, a real legacy has been left behind that the disabled community hope continues beyond the games.
The current statistics in the UK for disabled unemployment are staggering, a lot of disabled people struggle to gain employment through lack of opportunities. Following the games the hope is that disabled people will be recognised more for who they are and what they can do, rather than what they cant.
