1. Database Administrator – As a Database Administrator, you will be in charge of  the planning and development of a wide range of computer database systems. These databases must be user-friendly so that people can easily access information needed.  You will need to make sure that all data is organized and up to date, and be able to provide customer support and feedback.  Due increasing important information online along with increasing hacking, another important part of this job is to put in the best security measures and also ensure that you have a strong data-recovery/back-up system.

Qualifications Needed: Employers will look for previous IT experience with computer programming and database management systems, and a deep knowledge of IT skills. Most honours degrees are acceptable, but having studied for a qualification in a related subject would be super advantageous.

2. Data Entry Clerk – Data Entry Clerks are in charge of inputting and maintaining the data that enters the database systems.  Depending on what kind of company you are working for, you could be dealing with a variety of information – both words, and numerical (ie: keeping details of customers/sales for one firm versus inputting medical research data for another). Duties include transferring the data from paper files onto a computer into different spreadsheets. Generally, Data Entry jobs are combined with customer service.  Attention to detail and confidentiality are two very important parts of this job, as you might be dealing with sensitive information, and these figures’ accuracy are of the utmost importance to these companies’ work.

Qualifications Needed: Formal qualifications are not specifically needed, however having GCSE’s (A-C) in English and Maths would be beneficial. Basic computer skills such as typing and word processing are needed however, and you can have better chances of finding a job through an apprenticeship as well.

3. Web Designer – Web Designers are in charge of creating, designing and buidling websites.  This is a very creative and versatile job, as you could be working on an infinite number of types of sites found online. You will need to meet with the client to figure out what their vision is, and how you can best achieve it by creating a user-friendly and visually appealing site.  Duties will include deciding on the sizes and colors of texts, backgrounds, and and figuring out the layout of the page and where different buttons and media should appear.

Qualifications Needed: Although no formal qualifications are needed, you will have to have a good knowledge and understanding of HTML, codes, and web page building.  To help further your education, many colleges offer good basic training in related subjects.

Average Salary: £15,000

4. Systems Analyst – A Systems Analyst inspects clients’ IT systems and processes to ensure that they are working properly, as well as identifying and fixing any problems that might have risen. They will also need to recommend needed upgrades to these systems, and implement these new modifications.  Customer service is also important here, as you duties include making your client aware of what changes in the operating system are happening, and are usually required to train staff to ensure that the changes are understood.

Qualifications Needed: Previous experience in the IT Industry is needed, and normally a degree in a related subject is also asked for, such as in computer sciences, business information systems, or information management systems.

5. IT Project Manager – IT Project Managers oversee the process of the project strategy of the development of different computer systems, from start to finish.  They manage staff members and team to make sure that projects are completed on time and within their budget. You will help bring together the team to create and/or upgrade IT systems according to clients’ specifications, and ensure that your client’s understand the chance and are up-to-date with all progress.  This involves a variety of different systems, from smaller companies to large-scale high-risk projects.

Qualifications Needed: Many years of relevant experience in the field is needed, as well as a formal qualification, like a foundation degree in computing or project management.

Average Salary: £24,000

6. Forensic Computer Analyst – As a Forensic Computer Analyst, your main goal is to investigate computer-based crimes. This could include a variety of different levels of crime, from basic hacking or online scams to tracking terrorist organizations or political espionage. Your responsibilities are to recover and analyze data from computer systems and other devices to be able to use them as data and evidence in criminal prosecutions.

A good way to start in this industry would be to start at a more entry-level position such as a support technician or developer, and take courses and work your way up to this more specialized role.

7. IT Support Technician – IT Support Technicians help their customer’s find and correct software and hardware problems on computer operating systems.  This career has a big focus on customer service, as a main goal here is that you must be able to explain simply and clearly via phone, e-mail, or web support services to non-technically skilled people how to fix these problems.  You will need to help fix these problems as well as train clients on upgraded applications.

Qualifications Needed: Formal qualifications are not necessarily needed, however a strong background and knowledge of computer systems is a must.

8. Telephone-Switchboard Operator – A Telephone-Switchboard Operator typically work for larger organizations and are the first point of contact for people who call in. You will direct the calls to the appropriate person or department, and help to connect any outgoing calls as well. Your other duties will also include to manage the directory and making sure that all information is up-to-date, taking and passing along messages, as well as performing basic administrative tasks. 

Qualifications Needed: Formal qualifications are not necessarily needed, but some hiring managers might look for GCSEs (A-C) as well as basic knowledge in both computers and admin work.

Computer Service and Repair Technician – A Computer Service and Repair Technician is in charge of installing, maintaining, and repairing all sorts of different computer systems.  Duties will include installing new IT systems, repairing or upgrading existing ones, and you may also be asked to service other smaller equipment such as printers or fax machines. You may work for a business where you do work in-house, or you may also work for a company that does on-site visits for their clients, be it their house or place of employment.

Qualifications Needed: Again, formal qualifications are not generally needed, but having taken courses in related subjects would help improve your chances greatly, as well as already having good working knowledge of PC repair.
