(The Gardner Theory)
So many times in my life has this question come around, almost daily. If people aren’t trying to work out your intelligence in the first 10 seconds of meeting you, then the next time they meet they do they have already made up their minds about you. They work it out on a scale of 1-10 based on your looks and what comes out of your mouth and if all else fails they check out your Degree on Linkedin !
Your intelligence is likely to be based on your job title and sometimes where you were brought up :
Let’s say you were from an underprivileged background, in a multicultural town with heavily accented parents. Right from the off, the general populous would judge your intellectual level at a glance based on those factors alone. Wrong.
Intelligence is based on 8 very different categories – and your level of education, surprisingly is only ONE of them.
Historically your level of education, (the location/bank of mum and dad school) in particular was an instant acceptance or rejection on HR judgement day. Thankfully things have moved forwards with most Companies and HR departments now and they take a lot more into account during the hiring process.
So let’s start from the beginning: What are the 8 signs of Intelligence
1 Academic Intelligence The academic intelligence – shows an ability to absorb and retain information. To retain information and to be able to regurgitate this information in a different and more interesting manner than you absorbed it in by way of showing you understand the content and are able to analyse this information.
2 Interpersonal Intelligence The interpersonal intelligence – the ability to interact in a communicable fashion, both listening, engaging and enquiring whilst both parties are “interested and interesting” (Quote: TedX Speaker – Olivia Schofield )
3 Linguistic Intelligence The natural linguist – the ability to fathom languages with a natural aplomb.(nice word) Not only to learn a language easily but to learn language nuances and dialects while understanding the flow of the language and composition of the grammar applied.
4 Musical intelligence The musician – some say this one is the annoying one .. (“How come he can play every bloody instrument going- and plays by ear…! So unfair..) This is an excellent and exaggerated ability to hear music and create compositional music sometimes totally without the written word. Genius. Some say this may be born out of one of our senses failing and the other senses heightening to compensate. This could be another conversation. Emotional struggles and ability to interact in social environments can cause musicians to become insular and turn to music as a release – expression of music and words is a double attack and therefore extra special. i.e. Gary Barlow, Stevie Wonder.
5 Mathematical Ahhhh yes – The maths geek. Dreaming about spreadsheets, excel configurations, they love it all. They have brain connections that are wired to code and map equations and algorithms to their hearts content. The joy of calculus excites every bone it their bodies. Some would say a breed apart, others mutter, “what’s all the fuss about, it’s obvious!”
6 Spatial – sculpture – art -colour- design A natural ability to create and develop from ones inner imagination – sometimes from experiences or visuals around us. The develop flowing forms, colours and lines that are normally outside of one’s daily robotic behaviours. They possess a heightened sense of awareness of the visual art and a compassion for colour. “It’s just a maroon colour, nope it’s a light plum!”
7 Bodily – Athletic – Dancer To be in touch with the human form -To understand the complexities of the body and its abilities to soar in its own light. Many dancers feel from within, as do athletes. They drive themselves to reach almost unachievable goals and push themselves to the limit to be get perfection. Daily challenges, set targets, all the while adrenaline flowing. This is not only a body challenge but a mind and soul intelligence in the extreme.
8 Intrapersonal skills You might say the best form of intelligence of all. This is emotional intelligence, the ability to know, understand and manage your own emotions. Years ago, I used to look at senior people in companies and wonder how on earth they got to where they are. I once asked Mr Mark Cloutier (CEO Brit Insurance/Lloyds Board) what made him so successful.
Simple answer “common sense”. Says it all really.
Where do you fit in ?? (I’m a 2.4.6.8)
